Shirongo Festival

- The biggest festival of the Sugashima Island held every year on July 11th. This ritual of the Shirahige Shrine is performed by “Ama” female divers, who dive for abalones at the sound of a conch-shell trumpet. The one who find a brace of abalones first becomes the chief of the Ama divers of the year. The abalones are dedicated to the god of the shrine to pray for a good catch of fish and the safety.
